Platinum is the essential metal for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC). It accounts for 40-45% of the total cost of PEFC. On 13th September 2017, Nisshinbo Holdings Inc. released carbon-based catalyst for PEFC, named "carbon alloy" and it is utilized in a 30W PEFC for mobile devices made by Ballard Power Systems Inc.. The new catalyst is used in the air electrode of the Ballard's PEFC stack and decrease the stack's platinum usage by 80% than the present one. It may decrease the production cost and the life cycle environmental load and increase the material security of PEFCs.
