Measures to Meet the Energy Demand Rise in Developing Countries

Session background and objectives

A significant rise in energy demand is expected in developing countries in South and South East Asia. An optimal mix of energy sources need to be formulated, taking into account issues such as supply stability, environmental impact and economic efficiency. Due to its reliability and supply stability, consumption of fossil fuel is also expected to increase in some countries in the region, despite its climate implications. In this session, technologies needed to make full use of energy resources while reducing CO2 emissions in developing countries will be discussed.

Meeting Energy Demand in South and Southeast Asia

The electricity demand of South and Southeast Asia will continue to grow. In IEEJ’s latest energy outlook, the vast majority of the demand will be met by fossil fuel power, predominantly coal, in the reference scenario. Even in the advanced technology scenario, deployment of clean energy will still not replace all the fossil fuel power plants. This means that the coal will not go away soon. This makes it an imperative to make coal power plants as carbon-efficient as possible in order to achieve emissions reduction and economic growth of Asia. In this context, Japan has a role to play in diffusion of the technology through various policy means.

In the past 20 years, Vietnam's economy has been achieving an impressive growth with an average rate of 7%/year (GDP), from 21 in 1995 to USD 204 billion in 2015. To achieve that, in the period from 2000 - 2015, Vietnam had to kept the growth rate of electricity at over 13%/year in the period of 2000-2010 and over 11% in the period of 2011-2016.
Lacking of energy sources and inefficient use of energy in Vietnam are the drivers to the challenging for energy development in Vietnam.
Energy security should be together with sustainable development. In an effort to meet the energy need for socio-economic development and ensure energy security of the country, Viet Nam Government has a plan to promote the renewable energy as well as to energy efficiency and energy conservation.

Contribution to the environment and stable energy supply by introducing high efficiency power generation

In response to growing energy demand in Asian countries, the coal fired power generation is expected to be the important energy source in terms of 3E+S (Safety, Energy security, Economic efficiency and Environment). Therefore, promoting highly efficient coal-fired power generation is critical to addressing the climate change.
To improve plant efficiency and reduce carbon emissions for the global environmental protection, MHPS have been developing various clean coal technologies (CCT) e.g. Ultra Supercritical (USC) and IGCC technology, for the effective and clean utilization of coal.
This presentation introduces the history of such technological development along with the latest trends of CCT and also addresses our future direction as CCT for the contribution to environmental conservation.

  • What is the situation regarding energy demand/supply forecasts in South and Southeast Asian countries?
  • What would be an optimal mix of energy considering available energy resources, supply stability and economic efficiency?
